Thyroid surgery in burkina faso, west africa: experience from a surgical help program
Thu, 10/09/2008 - 09:29Abstract
Background Endemic goiter caused by iodine deficiency is still very common in sub-Saharan Africa and is a surgical challenge because
of the often large size of the goiters.
Methods A retrospective analysis was made of patients who underwent operation for thyroid diseases during a surgical help program
in Leo/Burkina Faso during a 7-year period from 2001 to 2008.
Results A total of 253 cases presented with goiters grade III (WHO classification) were operated on: 134 hemithyroidectomies, 108
Riedel’s thyroiditis — case report and literature review
Thu, 10/09/2008 - 08:11Abstract A fifty two year old female underwent attempted thyroidectomy for a progressively enlarging cervical swelling. At operation
the thyroid gland was extensively fibrosed and not resectable, frozen section showed fibrous replacement. The patient was
given a short course of postoperative corticosteroid therapy and was maintained on thyroid replacement therapy. Thirty months
later the patient remains asymptomatic.

Feasibility study of day case thyroidectomy
Wed, 10/08/2008 - 03:00Introduction: The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the feasibility and outcome of day case thyroidectomy in an ambulatory surgery centre in Hong Kong. Methods: Patients with day case thyroidectomy carried out between July 2005 and December 2006 were retrospectively reviewed. Day surgery was offered to patients satisfying the selection criteria for day case and having from benign unilobular thyroid disease. Results: Fifty patients had hemithyroidectomy carried out during the study period.
Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thyroid gland showing marked ciliation suggestive of its pathogenesis
Wed, 10/08/2008 - 03:00Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thyroid gland is a rare tumor first described by Rhatigan et al. in 1977. Its pathogenesis is still controversial. With regard to its most likely origin, some authors have suggested that it arises directly from follicular epithelium whereas others have proposed that it arises from ultimobranchial body (diverticulum from the fourth pharyngeal pouch) remnants, also known as solid cell nests (SCN). Herein is reported a unique case of thyroid mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The patient, a 67-year-old man, presented with a non-tender thyroid mass and vocal cord fixation.
Clinical significance of p53 protein expression in papillary thyroid carcinoma
Sun, 10/05/2008 - 07:03Abstract
Background Although mutations in the p53 suppressor gene in thyroid carcinoma have usually been detected in anaplastic carcinoma, P53 protein expression has been
detected immunohistochemically in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). In the present study, we examined the immunohistochemical
expression of P53 protein in PTC to investigate the relations between its expression and the clinicopathologic features.
Methods The study was performed on 68 patients in whom thyroidectomy with lymph node dissection had been performed to treat PTC at
