Thyroid Diagnosis

Kinetics of serum parathyroid hormone during and after thyroid surgery.

CONCLUSION:: Thyroid surgery impairs hormone secretion by the parathyroid glands resulting in postoperative latent parathyroid insufficiency. Normal PTH levels 3 h after surgery and a normal serum calcium level on the first postoperative day rule out persistent hypoparathyroidism. Copyright (c) 2008 British Journal of Surgery Society Ltd. Metastasis to the breast from medullary thyroid carcinoma

We report a case of metastatic MTC presented as palpable neck and breast nodules in a 39-year-old woman. Fine needle aspiration of breast nodules showed a cellular smear with relatively homogenous, poorly cohesive tumor cells in a relatively clean background. The tumor cells were round to oval, with hyperchromatic nuclei, abundant cytoplasm and plasmacytoid in appearance. A few amorphous materials, possibly amyloid, were also noted. The patient underwent radical thyroidectomy, cervical lymph node dissection and excision of breast nodules.

Severe group a streptococcus infection after thyroidectomy: report of three cases and review

Surgical Infections Oct 2008, Vol. 9, No. 5: 529-531.

Abstract Background: Group A Streptococcus (GAS) is an uncommon cause of infection after clean surgery in non-pregnant adults. Methods: Report of three cases and review of the literature. Results: For the first time in France, severe GAS infections were ... (Source: Surgical Infections)

Incidence and histopathological behavior of papillary microcarcinomas: study of 429 cases.

CONCLUSIONS: In this study, PMC was found in 49.9 percent of patients, which, to our knowledge, is higher than any other reported incidence. A threshold of >/=4 mm was more significant than 5 mm for carrying increased risk for extrathyroidal spread. There was no significant difference in PMC incidence in patients with malignant vs benign disease.

Oxidant/antioxidant balance in patients with thyroid cancer.

CONCLUSION: The superoxide dismutase does not seem to change with thyroid cancer and thyroidectomy but both antioxidant glutathione peroxidase and lipid peroxidation product malondialdehyde do. These preliminary findings may point out oxidant/antioxidant imbalance associated with thyroid cancer.

Histopathologic and clinical features of medullary microcarcinoma and c-cell hyperplasia in prophylactic thyroidectomies for med

CONCLUSIONS: Based upon our clinicopathologic findings and review of the literature, we conclude that thyroidectomies in at-risk patients are very frequently associated with C-cell hyperplasia and/or MMC; however, the clinical prognosis for these patients is very good.

Approach to the patient with a cytologically indeterminate thyroid nodule.

Conclusion: Although surgery continues to be commonly recommended, strategies for such patients should increasingly seek to define treatment based on the estimation of an individual's thyroid cancer risk in comparison with associated operative risk and morbidity. In doing so, the rate of unnecessary surgical procedures and associated complications can be reduced.

Long-term multidisciplinary follow-up of unilateral thyroid-associated orbitopathy.

CONCLUSIONS: Unilateral TAO is not different and just as severe as bilateral TAO. At initial work-up MRI shows signs of bi-laterality in 45% (4/9), with mild involvement of 1 or 2 extra-ocular muscles. The radiological status of affected muscles does not normalize, even in the very long term.

A case of polymyositis associated with papillary thyroid cancer: a case report

We report a case of a young woman who developed progressive proximal muscle weakness one and a half year after a total thyroidectomy for papillary thyroid cancer. Clinical features, laboratory results and muscle biopsy led us to the diagnosis of polymyositis, possibly related to her previous malignancy. A search for recurrence of the thyroid carcinoma or other underlying malignancy was fruitless. The patient improved slowly but almost completely after about 6 months of immunosupressive therapy, which she is still receiving. (Source: BioMed Central)
