Incidence and histopathological behavior of papillary microcarcinomas: study of 429 cases.

CONCLUSIONS: In this study, PMC was found in 49.9 percent of patients, which, to our knowledge, is higher than any other reported incidence. A threshold of >/=4 mm was more significant than 5 mm for carrying increased risk for extrathyroidal spread. There was no significant difference in PMC incidence in patients with malignant vs benign disease.

Histopathologic and clinical features of medullary microcarcinoma and c-cell hyperplasia in prophylactic thyroidectomies for med

CONCLUSIONS: Based upon our clinicopathologic findings and review of the literature, we conclude that thyroidectomies in at-risk patients are very frequently associated with C-cell hyperplasia and/or MMC; however, the clinical prognosis for these patients is very good.

A case of polymyositis associated with papillary thyroid cancer: a case report

We report a case of a young woman who developed progressive proximal muscle weakness one and a half year after a total thyroidectomy for papillary thyroid cancer. Clinical features, laboratory results and muscle biopsy led us to the diagnosis of polymyositis, possibly related to her previous malignancy. A search for recurrence of the thyroid carcinoma or other underlying malignancy was fruitless. The patient improved slowly but almost completely after about 6 months of immunosupressive therapy, which she is still receiving. (Source: BioMed Central)

The change in surgical practice from subtotal to near-total or total thyroidectomy in the treatment of patients with benign mult

Conclusions  Subtotal thyroidectomy resulted in a significantly higher rate of completion thyroidectomy for incidentally diagnosed thyroid
carcinoma compared with total or near-total thyroidectomy in patients with BMNG. The extent of surgical resection had no significant
effect on the rate of permanent complications. We recommend total or near-total thyroidectomy in BMNG to prevent recurrence
and to eliminate the necessity for early completion thyroidectomy in case of a final diagnosis of thyroid carcinoma.

Gabapentin attenuates late but not early postoperative pain after thyroidectomy with superficial cervical plexus block.

CONCLUSION: Oral preoperative administration of gabapentin did not modify immediate pain management in thyroidectomy patients receiving SCPB, but prevented delayed neuropathic pain at 6 mo.

Thyroid cancer: is the incidence rise abating?

Conclusion: The present study suggests that the rise in thyroid cancer incidence is now abating. It could reflect standardization in diagnostic procedures. Further studies, performed on a more prolonged period, are necessary to confirm these data.

Angiosarcoma of the thyroid

We report a case of 60-year-old man with history of 1 month
rapidly enlarging neck mass in the thyroid region. Ultrasound examination and CT scan showed resistance arising from the left
thyroid lobe. FNAC revealed necrotic tumor mass without any cytological specification. Because of the clinical findings, a
total thyroidectomy was indicated. The surgery was complicated by invasion of the tumor mass into the surrounding tissues.
Therefore, only left side hemithyroidectomy was performed. Histopathology including histochemistry proved positive staining
