Prospective trial evaluating electrical impedance scanning of thyroid nodules before thyroidectomy: final results.
Sat, 04/26/2008 - 07:19Thyroid fine needle aspiration and electrical impedance scanning (EIS) were performed on 216 patients before thyroidectomy in this prospective trial. EIS correctly diagnosed 87% of patients with malignant and 71% of patients with benign dominant thyroid nodules. Pretest cancer probability of 51% increased to 76% post-EIS. Preoperative use of EIS would result in a significant reduction in number of operations performed for benign thyroid nodules.Page: 843DOI: 10.1097/SLA.0b013e318165c757Authors: Nissan, Aviram MD *; Peoples, George E. Original article: surgery for hyperparathyroidism in image-negative patients
Mon, 04/21/2008 - 03:00Hypothesis Patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and negative preoperative localization imaging have a different outcome than patients with positive imaging.
Design Prospective single-surgeon case series.
Setting Referral center.
Patients Forty-two patients with primary hyperparathyroidism, indications for surgery, and both cervical ultrasonographic results and technetium Tc 99m sestamibi nuclear images that were nonlocalizing over a 5- year span.
Main Outcome Measures Extent of surgery required to produce cure; operative findings.

Sat, 04/19/2008 - 08:07Background: Mixed medullary-follicular carcinoma of the thyroid with a pleomorphic pattern is a rare malignant epithelial tumor characterized by clinical and immunohistochemical features of follicular and parafollicular thyroid cells. Different molecular mechanisms for mixed thyroid tumors have been suggested.
Influence of the thyroid remnant in the elevation of the serum thyroglobulin after thyroidectomy in differentiated thyroid carci
Thu, 04/17/2008 - 14:13Abstract
Purpose Stimulated thyroglobulin (Tg) and 131I total-body scan (TBS) have been the mainstays of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC), but now diagnostic TBS has been
eliminated from some follow-up protocols. Nevertheless, Tg can be negative in the presence of thyroid tissue, and moderately
elevated Tg poses management problems. The purpose of this study was to check how many patients have Tg negative but visible
thyroid tissue and if diagnostic TBS could be clinically useful.
Chemokines and autoimmune thyroid diseases
Thu, 04/17/2008 - 09:23Horm Metab ResDOI: 10.1055/s-2008-1073153AbstractChemokines are a family of small, structurally related molecules that regulate cell trafficking of various types of leukocytes through interactions with their seven-transmembrane, G protein-coupled receptors. Their major function is the recruitment of leukocytes to inflammation sites, but they also play roles in tumor growth, angiogenesis, organ sclerosis, and autoimmunity.
