Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy of thyroid nodules performed in the office.
Thu, 01/31/2008 - 07:51Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is the gold standard in the diagnostic evaluation of patients with a thyroid nodule. Ultrasound guidance of FNAB improves the accuracy of sampling, especially in lesions that are small or non-palpable, indistinct lesions, lesions located posteriorly or deep in the thyroid and cystic lesions. Dr. Seiberling and colleagues report experience with ultrasound guided FNAB in 203 patients undertaken in an outpatient office setting. A satisfactory specimen was obtained in 81.2% and the diagnostic rate was 90%.
Jonathan takes the wheel
Thu, 01/31/2008 - 02:58Jonathan Anderson is 9 years old and has Asperger Syndrome—-when his mother, Marion Anderson, blacked out while driving on the highway, he avoided a crash by grabbing the steering wheel, pulling on the handbrake, and driving the car across three lanes of rush-hour traffic at Plympton, Devon, the January 31st Daily Mail reports. Jonathan and his mother were both uninjured: “‘It was scary because I’ve never driven a car before,’” he was quoted as saying. Sounds like he knew what to do, and at the right time—bravo.
