Hepatitis b vaccine and risk of autoimmune thyroid disease: a vaccine safety datalink study
Wed, 12/27/2006 - 06:00Hepatitis B vaccine has been postulated as a possible cause of autoimmune disorders, including autoimmune thyroid diseases (ATD). Cases of Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, following hepatitis B vaccine have been reported to the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS).

Proinflammatory cytokine gene polymorphisms among hashimoto's thyroiditis patients
Sun, 11/19/2006 - 00:03Proinflammatory cytokines are involved in the pathogenesis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). To test whether certain specific proinflammatory cytokine gene polymorphisms could be genetic markers for an individual's susceptibility to HT, we investigated single-site polymorphisms of certain proinflammatory cytokine genes of interest for 107 HT sufferers and 163 controls, subsequent to preparing the necessary experimental genomic DNA from peripheral blood, using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based restriction analysis.

Concurrent immune thrombocytopenic purpura and guillain-barre syndrome in a patient with hashimoto's thyroiditis
Tue, 09/19/2006 - 03:00Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) are autoimmune disorders caused by impaired self-tolerance mechanisms triggered by interaction between genetic and environmental factors. ITP is an immune-mediated destruction of platelets resulting in mucocutaneous bleeding, GBS is an ascending motor paralysis caused by an inflammatory demyelination of peripheral nerves, and HT is characterized by autoimmune-mediated destruction of the thyroid gland.
